Safety Tips

 Beware of the Dugo-dugo Gang.

The Modus Operandi of the Dugo-dugo gang is to place a call on the most ideal time when the Kasambahay is left alone in the house. To gain her trust, the perpetuator may either pose as a family friend or a person in authority. He then tells her that her Boss met an accident and as the offender needs money to settle it. In addition, the perpetuator will tell the Kasambahay that her Boss’ cell phone was confiscated to explain why the call did not originate from her. Finally to remove any remaining doubt on her mind, the phone will be passed to an accomplish posing as her Boss and because of the stated accident, sounding a bit different, is very much understandable.  The Kasambahay will be bombarded with a lot of information designed to confuse her and ultimately to convince her that she is doing the right thing - to gather the valuables and bring it to a specified location.

P A K I U S A P

HOME SECURITY

When leaving the premises for a short time:

  • Lock all external doors, windows etc.
  • Do not leave key inserted in the door lock, stow them away, this makes it more difficult for thieves to make a quick exit if they have made a forced entry.
  • Never hide keys under doormats, flowerpots or similar places.
  • After dark, leave the lights on (not just in the hallway).  Close curtains or blinds. It may be worth investing in a timer switch for activating lights within the unit. Some desktop radios can be programmed by an internal timer to turn on and off at specific times of the day or night.  This is a helpful tool to give the illusion someone is inside the premises.
  • Keep electrical equipment and valuables out of sight whenever possible.

If you will be away for a longer period of time, remember the ff:

  • Do not let anyone know you are going to leave your unit and consider having a trusted helper or maid staying in while you are gone.
  • If you have regular helpers or maids living inside your unit keep the details of your trip plans to a minimum and call regularly to check on your household help.
  • If you live alone, discontinue deliveries of milk, newspapers or the like in advance way before you depart.
  • If you leave the curtains closed be sure you have a timer switch for activating the lights or invest in a programmable desktop radio.
  • Ensure the front doors and all entry points to your unit are securely locked, if you have guard grills over your windows inspect the padlocks make sure they are locked as well. No spare key should be surrendered to outside parties except for family members or trusted personnel.   A quality deadbolt is a good deterrent for the main door and this cannot be easily pried open.
  • Should you have any valuables this should be stored in the bank.
  • Be careful when labeling holiday luggage with your home address.  It has been known for unscrupulous people to hang around airports taking note of the home address on your luggage tag as this could be a sign of a possible vacant home.
